John was born in 1800 in Hilltown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, mere months before his family moved to Clinton Township, Lincoln, Ontario, Canada. Elizabeth Funk married John when she and her sister Katie visited the area. Their wedding trip was to Bucks, County, PA by horseback.
