Lawrence Walker Rittenhouse was born 11 Nov 1823. He was the son of William H. Rittenhouse and Abigail Lawrence. He inherited his first name from his mother's surname. He married Rachel A. Bayard, daughter of Dr. Anthony Walter/Walton Bayard of Bellefonte, and had eight children.

During the Civil War, Lawrence Walker was also a member of the Centre Dragoons and was a prominent member of the community. He later became the first Chief Burgess of Bellefonte.
