Research Notes: This profile may need to be merged with this other one. See - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Rivard-1735. Is the Louis referred to in the baptism reference in this profile actually Laurent's father? More research is required to make sense of all this.
He was said by family members to have lived to age 100 and died of pneumonia 3 days after taking a load of lumber to Maine.
Louis was baptized in Montreal [1]"ne dans le pays next word unreadable" at about age 12 natural son of Louis Rivet who was later identified as a Voyageur et d'une sauvagesse de l'endroit. Louis had a wife in Montreal and his "country wife" was at his usual destination which was Michilimackinac. Ne dans le pays suggests that his parents are both sauvage. Also his baptism date 9 June 1811 was used as his birth date and remember, he was about 12 when baptized (more like 14).
When he was married his name was Jean fils de Louis Rivet et de Marie Louise last name unreadable but it was St Denis (Louis's 3rd wife and NOT Jean's mother, who was a "country wife") de cette paroisse. He married Marie Charlotte Lavois, daughter of Jean Roch Lavois and Angelique Langlois dit St Jean 11 Nov 1839 in St Basile, NB. [2] There were 13 known children of the union, all baptized in St Basile.
On the 1851 census, we find him in St Basile, Laurent River a farmer tenant having entered the colony in 1831, his reported age is 35 his wife Charlotte who entered the colony in 1827, is 30 and six children, Elodi age 10, Moise age 8, John R age 7, Sophia age 5, Placid age 4 and Idete age 1.
On the 1860 Census we find him at Grand Isle Plantation in Maine, a farm servant named Larent Rivers age 49, his wife Mary age 49, 11 children, Lody 2 (should be 20), Marice 18, Jenny 16, Sophia 13, Placy 12, Edite 10, Laurence 8, Zeben 6, David 5, Peyon 2, Angel 1. Missing is 15 y/o Jean Roch who we see again on the 1871 census and Victoire who died when she was 3 months old.
In Nov of 1861 we see Laurent Rivers of Grand Falls selling an 11 acre parcel of land to JB Dubey for $8. Apparently unsatisfied with the grant of 11 acres on the Green River of St Basile parish, he squatted in the town of Grand Falls in protest.
On the 1871 Census we find Larence Lever in Grand Falls age 58 his wife Mary age 58, Moses age 30, John age 28, Pleased age 28, Lorone age 18, Dovet age 16 and Pay Augh age 12.
The 1881 Census shows Laura Rivers in Grand Falls age 69, a common laborer, his wife Mary age 68, Laura age 26, David age 23 and Peter age 21.
In 1891 same house we see the head of the house as Joseph age 27 (Peter on last census), his wife Philomene age 22, Denise age 5, Fred age 3, Sophie age 1, his father Lawrence age 73, Mary his mother age 75 and David his brother age 35. Next door is brother Lawrence Rivers age 37 and wife Florence age 22 (her name was Alphonsine)
His death registration [3]confirms he died of pneumonia of a 3 day duration. In this document his name is Laurent Rivard and he is said to have been 86, add 14 years to that and you get 100 his true age. He was also said to be from Montreal which was the place of his baptism, not the place of his birth.
He was also known to have been a voyageur (stated on his wife's burial record), and a custodian at the Assumption church in Grand Falls.
