Francis Edmond Rivard was born on July 3, 1872 in Tecumseh, Essex, Ontario to Thomas Rivard and Adelle Trombly[1][2] . His uncle, Joseph Rivard, signed as witness to his late birth registry[1]. He was baptized as François Edmond Rivard on July 5, 1872 in Ste-Anne parish in Tecumseh, Essex, Ontario. His godparents were Antoine Rivard and Cécile Campeau[3]
In 1881, when Francis was 8 years old, his family was residing in Sandwich, Essex, Ontario. The household consisted of Thomas Rivard, a farmer, his wife, Adelle, and their four children: Francis, James, Fredrick, and Ernest.[4]
The family was still residing in Sandwich in 1891. The household consisted of Thomas Rivard, his wife Adèle, and their nine children: Edmond, James, Alfred, Ernest, Arthur, Aimee, Rosa, Dehlia, and Isidore. Edmond and James are listed as farmers alongside Thomas.[5]
Edmond's family continued to reside in Sandwich in 1901. The household consisted of Adelle Rivard, who was widowed, along with her children: Armand (Edmond), J (James), Alfred, Ernest, Arthur, Aimee, Rose, Delina, and Isidore[6]
He married Marguerite Pitre on April 29, 1901 in Sandwich[7]. They had three children together.
Marie Elizabeth Rivard born March 30, 1902 and baptized April 6, 1902 in Sandwich[8]
Marie Olive Rivard born January 15, 1904 and baptized January 17, 1904 in Sandwich[9]
Marie Josephine Séraphine Rivard born January 30, 1906 and baptized February 5, 1906 in Sandwich, later became Mother St. Gilbert of the Ursuline Convent[10]
His wife died on March 22, 1909 in Tecumseh of tuberculosis. Her funeral was held on March 24, 1909 at St-Anne's parish, and was buried in their cemetery[11].
Edmond was still residing in Sandwich in 1911. His household consisted of himself and his daughter, Elizabeth[12]. Olive was living with his mother in Windsor, and Seraphine was living with Marguerite's mother.
The family had relocated to Windsor by 1921. The household consisted of Edmond and his daughters Elizabeth and Olive. Elizabeth's daughter, Marguerite was also living with them[13].
Edmond died on September 18, 1963 in Sandwich, Essex, Ontario at the age of 92. He was survived by his daughters Seraphine and Elizabeth, his brothers Ernest and Arthur, 5 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. His funeral was on September 21, 1963. He was buried in St-Anne's Cemetery[14]
Research Notes
His birth registration gives his birth year as 1871, but the baptism states he was born in 1872. Given that it's a late birth registry, I'm more inclined to believe the baptism record.
I have been unable to locate another copy of Edmond's baptism record on FamilySearch as of yet (8/31/2021).
Seraphine was only called Josephine in her birth registration.
Marguerite's gravestone puts her death date as March 19, but most records say the 22nd.
