Biography

The book Sentences and Completes Index Nominum (Probates and Sentences) for the Years 1630-1639 mentioned his name on page 72, and it says:

“George Rivers, of Fish Hall, Kent, Esq.

Nephew James Rivers v. nepotes Sir John Rivers, Bt. Wm. R., and Wm. R., and also next-of-kin James Rivers.

Sent. pro cont. test. Jan. 28, 1631-2. [3 Audley]

Admon w. Will [69 Audley] June 16, 1632.”[1]

George Rivers had two children:

  1. Edward Rivers of Fishhall, in Hadlow, Kent, died 21 December 1660, aged 33.[2]
  2. Frances Rivers, the wife of Edward Sadlow of London, died 23 October 1656.[2]

'George Rivers of Fishall, Hadlow, Kent, Esq., one of the younger sons of Sir George Rivers of Chafford Kent, kt., deceased' made his Will on 18th April 1632. He requested burial in the chancel of Hadlow 'as near to the place where my grandmother and my uncle lie'.

He refers to bequests he received from his uncle, Edward Rivers Esq., deceased and then made his own bequests to

  • wife Rose
  • son Edward (under the age of 22)
  • daughters Judith and Frances (both under the age of 18)
  • his nephew James Rivers (the son and heir apparent of George's brother Sir John Rivers kt., Bart.) and James's 2nd son Thomas Rivers and his eldest son and heir apparent George Rivers
  • his brother Sir John Rivers
  • his goddaughter Jane Rivers (under the age of 16) the second daughter of George's nephew James Rivers
  • his brother William Rivers
  • his goddaughter Mary Rivers the daughter of his brother Sir John Rivers
  • his Executors were named as wife Rose Rivers and nephew James Rivers
