At the age of 19 years he travelled out to Australia on his own At 5am on the 17th September 1911 Richard died at his property "Federal estate",Gilmore, via Tumut NSW,cause of death was gall stones and a liver complaint. Richard Morris Rivers was born in the London Inn, in Ivybridge, Devon. The Inn was a highly-respected coaching stop for the run from Plymouth to London, and had been in the hands of the Rivers Family from the 1780s to the death of Richard's father, William Rivers, in 1854. Richard attended boarding school in Plymouth as did his siblings. At 19 years of age he decided to emigrate to Australia and travelling alone he departed Liverpool on 22 November, 1854, aboard the vessel ' Shalimar', 1402 tons, with 413 passengers, arriving Melbourne on 8 February, 1855. Leaving the ship he went to Kangaroo Ground, north-east of Melbourne, and it was here that he met his future wife, Anne Taylor Jones. They were married on 28 June, 1859, at Richmond, Melbourne. Other members of the Rivers family followed Richard to Australia - Elizabeth Anne, William Henry, and Emily Rose, arrived Melbourne, 7 August, 1858, aboard the 'Orwell'. Richard and Anne farmed all their married lives first in Victoria, then in New South Wales near Hay, and finally at Gilmore, near Tumut. He became important in the District's agricultural business, becoming a shareholder and director of the Tumut Butter Factory, and another time was president of the Tumut Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Richard's obituary in The Tumut Advocate, in part, stated, 'He was a man of undaunted courage and thoroughly understood the ABC of pastoral and agricultural colonial life. He was a worthy Briton, honest to a fault, and his cheery presence will long be missed. He was one of those we could ill-afford to lose'.
Keith Gittoes, great grandson.
