Marie Eugenie Rivet, daughter of Paul Rivet and Marceline Eulalie Moralez, was born on 28 August 1867 in Assumption Parish, Louisiana, United States. She was baptized on 14 October 1867 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Paincourtville. Her godparents were Desire Braud and Christine Ayraud.[1][2] Eugenie grew up in the French-speaking Cajun farming community, not having learned to read or write English, but she could speak English.[3][4] She apparently learned to read and write many years later.[5]
She married Henry Elphege Legleu, son of Charles Balthazar Legleu and Marie Mathilda Dugas, in Assumption Parish. They obtained a marriage license on 7 January 1886,[6] and were married on 26 January 1886 at St. Elizabeth Church. Witnesses were Clovis Legleu, Ferdinand Dugas, C. C. Clifton, Hippolite Therriot, and C. B. Legleu.[7]
Eugenie and Henry had ten children:
Most of their children were baptized in Assumption Parish, but by 1898 their records started appearing in Iberville Parish. During the 1900 census, the family lived there in a house which they owned free and clear. Henry made his living as a carpenter.[3] In 1910, they rented a home on a farm on Brusly Lacroix Road, where Henry was a blacksmith.[4] Perhaps their home was located on the Kinsale Plantation, a mile west of White Castle, where they lived by at least 1917.[8] They were again enumerated on Brusly Lacroix Road in 1920.[5]
Eugenie died on 10 October 1927, and was buried in White Castle Cemetery.[2]
