Biography

Marie Modeste Rivet, daughter of Theodore Rivet and Marie Esther LeBlanc, was born on 4 May 1790. She was baptized on 30 May 1790 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in St. Gabriel, Iberville Parish, Louisiana, New Spain. Her godparents were Joseph Babin and Marie Landry.^[1]

She married David Close Hatch, who was her sister's widow, on 3 January 1818 in Iberville Parish. David was the son of Timothee Hatch and Jeanne Dorsley [?].^[2][3]

Modeste and David had the following known children:

1. Jean Archibald Hatch, b. 9 Jan 1817
2. Jean Jackson Hatch, b. 28 Jun 1818

She died by 13 April 1819, when she was buried at the St. Gabriel Catholic Church Cemetery.^[4]

Research Notes

Possible child, Keziah Latham Hatch:

It is possible Modeste may have also had a child named Keziah Latham Hatch, born on or about the same day as her son Jean Archibald Hatch. This is according to online trees, with no sources provided to support it. Would they have been twins? Or was Jean Archibald mis-named in the baptism, or mis-transcribed by the Diocese in their publication? The only viable source found to date for Keziah is in David Hatch's succession files,^[5] naming one of his three heirs as "Mrs. Morris." A signature on the next-to-last page in the file reveals her name as "Kezia L Morris," signing just above the signature of "L C Morris," the administrator of the estate (and apparently Keziah's husband, Leroy Coleman Morris).
