Biography

Desire Taileur Rivet, son of Adam Senat Rivet and Jeanette Julienne Daigle, was born on 7 April 1881, and was baptized on 21 May 1881 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Paincourtville, Assumption Parish, Louisiana, USA. His godparents were Oscar Daigle and Marcelitte Rivet.[1][2] Taylor lived with his parents in Assumption Parish.[3] He was literate and had a fourth grade education.[4]

He applied for a marriage license with Lydia Ramagos on 23 January 1903, and they were married in Assumption Parish.[5] They had eight known children together:

  1. Irvin Joseph Rivet, b. 30 Mar 1905
  2. Joseph Araban Rivet, b. 30 Mar 1905
  3. Mildred Elizabeth Rivet, b. about 1907
  4. Jean Gillis Rivet, b. 25 Nov 1908
  5. Alvin J. Rivet, b. 23 Jul 1913
  6. Mabel Rivet, b. 26 Jul 1917
  7. Clifton Rivet, b. about 1921
  8. Lee Douglas Rivet, b. 17 Feb 1928

During the 1910 census, Taylor and Lydia and their children were enumerated on their rented farm in Ascension Parish.[6]

He was required to register for the third draft of the first World War, held on 12 September 1918. At that time, he and Lydia lived in Maringouin, Iberville Parish. Taylor was employed as a farmer tenant for L. P. and E. B. Schwing at the Mound Plantation, located three miles south of Maringouin. He was described as being tall and of medium build, with gray eyes and black hair.[7][8] They were still in Iberville Parish during the 1920 census.[9] In 1930, they were farming in Pointe Coupee Parish, renting their home on Jefferson Highway.[10] By 1940, they were back in Iberville Parish, living along the Public Highway. They owned their home, which was valued at $2,000. Taylor was unemployed, but was not seeking work.[4]

Taylor died a few months later on 22 October 1940, at age 59, in New Orleans, Orleans Parish.[2][11][12] He was buried at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic cemetery in Maringouin. His grave is located in Section 1, Row 15.[2][13]
