Biography

François O'Neil Rivette, son of François Rivette and Marie Sidonize Guidroz, was born in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, United States, on 13 August 1826. He was baptized on 24 June 1827 according to the registers at St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas. His godparents were Jean Baptiste Guidreau and Delphine Guidreau.[1][2]

He married Adeline Alexandra Delhomme, daughter of Alexandre Delhomme and Adelphine Bergeron, on 19 March 1850 in Breaux Bridge, St. Martin Parish.[3][4] The couple was enumerated there in November 1850, during the census.[5]

François and Adeline had six known children:

  3. Marie Odile (Adele) Rivette (1856 - 1858)
  4. Marie Evelina Rivette (abt.1858 - 1883)
  5. Alexandre Vital Rivette (1859 - 1937)
  6. Joseph Jean Baptiste Rivette (1863 - )

In 1860, the family lived in or near Grand Point, St. Martin Parish. Their real estate was valued at $26,000, with a personal estate value of $200.[6] François owned one male slave aged 20 years, and three female slaves ages 11, 9 and 6 years.[7]

François served the Confederacy during the Civil War. It is not known when he enlisted.

He was a Private in Company B of the 26th Louisiana Infantry at the time of his capture, and was paroled at New Iberia, Louisiana, at the end of the war.[8]

He was left a widower at age 43, in 1869.[9] During the 1870 census, François and his children lived in Laplace, St. Martin Parish.[10]

He next married Marie Azeoline Guidroz, daughter of Jean Baptiste Guidroz and Emelite Bergeron, on 20 March 1871 in Breaux Bridge.[11] They had one known child:

  1. Joseph Zin Rivette, b. 26 Nov 1874[12]

Azeoline died in 1883 at Arnaudville, St. Landry Parish.[13]

His third marriage was to Zeolide Matthieu. They obtained a marriage license on 24 December 1883 in St. Martinville, St. Martin Parish,[14] and were married on 14 May 1884 in Breaux Bridge.[15] There were no known children of that union.

François died at age 65 on 25 January 1892 in Arnaudville, and was probably buried there at the St. Francis Regis Church Cemetery.[16][17]
