Biography

Alzire Rivette, daughter of Alexandre Rivette and Marie Louisa Lagrange, was born on 24 January 1900. Her baptism was recorded at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Port Barre, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, USA.^[1] She lived with her parents and siblings on the 1900 and 1910 censuses in Port Barre, northeast of Bayou Teche. The primary language spoken in the home was French.^[2][3] The family has not been found in the 1920 census.

She married Earl Coles, son of Edmond DeJean Coles and Ione Drusilla Holden, on 8 February 1925 in Leonville, St. Landry Parish. Witnesses were Mrs. Ed Coles, Theophile Rivette, and Simon Rivette. Rev. Father Charles officiated.^[4][5] They had six children.^[4]

Alzire and Earl were enumerated on the 1930 census with their children, living on Dejean Street in Leonville.^[6] In 1940 they lived "south of the gravel" on the first dirt road east of Leonville.^[7]

Alzire was widowed in 1966 in Metairie, Jefferson Parish.^[8] She died at age 89 on 5 July 1989 in Metairie,^[9][10] and was buried at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, in section M.^[11]
