Biography

Joseph Eugene Rivette, son of Jean Baptiste Rivette and Marie Emma Lanclos, was born on 10 June 1888 in Arnaudville, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, United States.[1][2] He was enumerated with his parents and siblings during the 1900 census, living northeast of Bayou Teche in St. Landry Parish.[3] Eugene never received a formal education.[4]

He married Odile Moreau, daughter of Alexandre Moreau and Odile Castille, in St. Landry Parish. They applied for a marriage license on 27 October 1908 in Opelousas,[5] and were wed the same day in Port Barre.[6][7] Eugene and Odile were enumerated together during the 1910 census, renting a farm in St. Landry Parish.[8]

Their children were:

  1. Joseph Camille Rivette (1910 - 1988)
  2. Isabelle Marie Rivette (1912 - 2004)
  3. Marie Louise Rivette (1914 - 1977)
  4. Joseph Clement Rivette (1917 - 1972)
  5. Oscar Antoine Rivette (1919 - 1984)
  6. Joseph Eugene Rivette (1922 - 2003)
  7. Odile Rivette (1924 - 2014)
  8. Antoine Rivette (1927 - 2008)
  9. John Daniel Rivette (1929 - 2005)
  10. Allen James Rivette (1931 - 1977)

During the 1917 draft of World War I, they were living in Leonville, where he listed a wife and three young children as his dependents.[2] The family has not been found in the 1920 census. They were enumerated in St. Landry during the 1930 census, still renting their farm.[9]

By 1940, they owned their farm, which was located on the Pecaniere dirt road and valued at $400. During the week before the census was taken, Eugene worked 45 hours on his farm. In 1939 he was employed for 36 weeks.[4]

Eugene registered for the draft during World War II, held on 27 April 1942. At that time, his residence was in rural Arnaudville, St. Landry Parish. He was described as about 5 feet 11 inches tall, 155 pounds, with gray eyes, gray hair, and ruddy complexion. He was self employed.[10]

He died at age 73 on 20 May 1962 in Leonville, St. Landry Parish. He was buried at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church Cemetery.[11]
