Biography

Marie Doralise Rivette, daughter of Joseph Rivette and Emelia Cormier, was born on 3 November 1846 in Grand Coteau, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, United States.^[1] She was enumerated with her parents and siblings during the 1850 and 1870 censuses in St. Landry Parish.^[2][3]

She married Michel Hargroder, son of Henry Hargroder and Arthemise Damoine Louviere, in St. Landry Parish. They applied for a marriage license on 28 October 1875 in Opelousas, and were wed on 17 November 1875 in Arnaudville.^[4][5] Their children were:

2. Marie Flavie Hargroder (1880 - 1968)

They were enumerated during the 1880 census, living in St. Landry Parish.^[6]

Doralise was widowed at age 35, in 1882.^[7] She was enumerated as the head of a household on the 1900 census in St. Landry Parish, with her daughters, her father Joseph Rivet, nephew Theophile Rivet, and a boarder Thelesmare Lanclos. (Flavie married Thelesmare two years later.) Doralise owned her farm free and clear. She could read and write but not speak English.^[8] In 1910 and 1920, her household included her children and grandchildren.^[9][10]

She died at age 93 on 30 January 1940 in Leonville,^[11] and was probably buried there.

Need to find family in 1860 and 1930 censuses.

Reviewing family members in 1910-1920 census: The 1910 household includes a "son" Morris Hargroder, age 16, and a "grandson" Lonney Hargroder, age 15. This seems odd. The 1920 census sheds more light, showing grandchildren Morris, Columbus, and Omar Lanclos, who were her daughter Flavie's sons. So even though the ages are off by 10 years, the 1910 household seems to have actually included Flavie's children "Morris" (Maurice Lanclos) and "Lonney" (Columbus Lanclos). It's unknown why Flavie and her children were living with Doralise instead of Flavie's husband in 1910-1920. The remaining Lanclos grandchildren listed in 1920 were actually Dora's children Ida, Eddie, and Lillian Gotreaux.
