Biography

Fiore, who used his middle name of Phillip, was born to James and Mary Rizzuto who were both immigrants from Italy arriving in the Unites States in 1875. Phillip was one of 7 children all born in New York City.

According to the 1910 US Census, Phillip was a driver for a contracting company.[1] In 1920 his employment is listed as a motorman for the BRT.[2] By 1930, he was working as a laborer in the building industry.[3] In the 1940 US Census, Phillip was a watchman on the docks of New York City.[4] In 1950 he was a guard in the maritime services and living with his daughter Rose and her husband, Paul Esatts.[5]

On Phillip's World War I draft registration form, he is listed as being of medium height and build with brown hair and brown eyes.[6] On his World War II draft registration card his description was much more specific. He is described as 5'6" tall, weighing 198 lbs., with brown hair and eyes and a ruddy complexion.[7] This record also gives us his date of birth, 17 December 1891, and his full name, Fiore Philip Rizzuto.[7]

Phillip married Rose Angotti, who was an Italian immigrant arriving in the US in 1901.[3] They had 6 children, four daughters - two of whom did not survive infancy - and two sons. Their eldest son, Phillip Francis Rizzuto (1917-2007) would go on to become a Hall of Fame baseball player for the New York Yankees in the late 1940's and early 1950's.

Phillip died in New York in July 1966 at the age of 75.[8]
