James was born in 1808 in Selby Parish, North Yorkshire, England to William Stevens Roadhouse (1774-1857) and Elizabeth Crissey (1774-1864), the seventh of twelve children. The family came to Upper Canada in 1819 (as declared in the 1901 Canada Census), and they settled in Albion Township, Peel County.
James married Nancy (Monkman) Roadhouse (1809-1849) about 1827. They settled in Albion and raised three children there (Rachel, Sarah and Morrison). About 1840 they sold their land and resettled in Mariposa at Little Britain where their youngest daughter Margaret was born. He farmed, and operated a general store there.
His wife Nancy died in 1846. James traveled and sold medicinal herbs. He retired back to Albion, to live with daughter Margaret, and passed away in 1904, 96 years.
Excerpt from the Little Britain book (1939), page 37:
JAMES ROADHOUSE and his wife drove with oxen and followed surveyors' trails by way of Manilla [1] to Mariposa [township]. He owned the farm where the Canadian Bank of Commerce now stands[2], also a store near the same site, one of the first stores in the village. He is said to have harboured two rebels at the time of the Mackenzie rebellion. One of his many descendants living in or near by the village is Mrs. Mary (Mark) Heatlie [3].
