He was born in Wales, the son of Randolph Roan of Hanmer, and was educated at Brasenose College, Oxford, and Trinity College, Dublin; He became Vicar of Hanmer in 1644 and ‘Though a native of Hanmer and son of Randolph Roan of Hanmer he was not accepted by the people of Hanmer and soon left’. [1]
He was Chaplain to Primate James Margetson, Archbishop of Armagh, and Rector Erriglekeerogue, 1665-7. Preb. Swords 1664-75, Vicar Donaghmore, Meath c. 1667-75.
John Roan, D.D., was presented by the Crown to the Deanery and to the R. of Louth and V. St Peter's, Drogheda, and R. Beaulieu on 19 August 1667 [2]. He was installed August 27th [3].
He became Bishop of Killaloe in 1675 and died September 5th, 1692. [4] He was buried at the east end of the cathedral. His tomb bears the following inscription: “Hic jacet corpus Joannis Roan, S.S. Theologiae Doctoris, Laonensis Episcopi, qui obiit 5o die Septembris, A.D. 1692 (Here lies the body of John Roan, DD and Bishop of Killaloe, who died on 5 September 1692).” [5] [6]
