Side: USA
Regiment(s): Company E 2nd New York Cavalry

Benson was born in 1848. He was the son of Alvin Robbins and Harriet Kilmer. He passed away about 1950.

The following story comes from the Clinton County, NY, Civil War Records 1861-1865 Facebook Page:

FOLLOWED IN HIS FATHER’S FOOTSTEPS - Benson C. Robbins was born on June 20, 1848, in Syracuse, NY, where his father, Rev. Alvin Robbins, was then a pastor of one of the M. E. Churches, and a member of the Black River and Troy Conferences for forty years.

Benson was educated at the Jonesville Academy, Washington County, NY, and the Fort Edward Institute. At the age of 16, in the summer of 1864, while still a student in Fort Ann, he enlisted in Plattsburgh to serve for three years in Company E, 2nd Cavalry. For enlisting he received a town bounty of $600. Benson served until the close of the war in the Shenandoah Valley and on the Appomattox Campaign and was wounded and otherwise disabled in the line of active service. He was placed by the United States Bureau of Pensions on the pension rolls for that disability. He was mustered out on August 5, 1865, at Alexandria, VA.

After Benson returned from the war, his father moved the whole family to Michigan. Benson married Jemima Manchester in 1870 and they had a daughter who lived until 1967. He was ordained an elder by the Wesleyan Conference at Spring Arbor, MI, in 1883, and was an evangelist and pastor in that state for twenty-one years and served as pastor of the First Congregational Church of Crystal, MI. He retired from the ministry after 1900 and died in Freesoil, MI, on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan in 1918. Jemima died in 1925 and was buried under the same stone in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Freesoil.
