Biography

This profile is part of the Hawke Name Study.

Maggie, born 14 August 1857 in Stark County, Ohio,[1][2] is the daughter of Michael Rabenstein and Anna Mishler.[1] She grew up in Springfield Township, Summit County, Ohio, in a working class family of laborers. In 1870, the household was comprised of her parents Michael (age 47) and Ann (42); Margaret A. (13); siblings Seriah (Urias (17, laborer), Dallas (19, laborer), Henry (16, laborer), Mary A. (8), Joseph C. Perry (6) and Cassie (3).[3]

Even though she could read and write,[4] Maggie worked as a domestic servant for the Milo White family with its three children under the age of 3,[5] before her marriage to Lewis Hawk on 28 July 1881 in Summit County, Ohio.[6] Maggie and Lewis had three children—all of whom survived childhood:

Maggie's father Michael died 1893[16] and her mother followed him to the grave in 1900.[17] By 1900, the Hawk family was complete. Living together in Suffield Township were Lewis (age 43, farmer), Maggie (43), Gertrude B. (18), Miles E. (17) and Harry E. (13).[2] Only Harry (age 22), a mail carrier, remained at home with his parents in 1910.[4]

Her husband Lewis died 20 January 1916 in Mogadore from lobar pneumonia resulting from la grippe.[18][19] After his death she continued to live with her son Harry in Springfield Township.[20] It is always sad when a parent buries a child. It must have been especially difficult for Maggie, when her son Harry—with whom she lived—died in 1926.[15]

Upon her death from lobar pneumonia on 10 October 1928,[1] Maggie was buried in East Akron Cemetery, Akron, Summit County, Ohio[21] next to her husband.[22]
