Margaret Roberts, daughter of Lewis Roberts and granddaughter of John Roberts,[1] was born about 1660 (probably in Taunton, Somerset, England).[2].

She married Joseph Paul, a sergemaker (from an ancestry of wool-combers) of Ilminster, Somerset, at Cullompton, Devon, England on 2 May 1680.[2][3][4] At the time of their marriage, Margaret was living in Bur Liscombe and Joseph in Holcombe Regis, Devonshire, but their certificate came from Taunton, Somerset.[5]

Children's birth records show them members of Mid Somerset Quaker Monthly Meeting, England. In 1682 her husband Joseph was among 31 Friends, accused in a fight, and he was imprisoned for a short time.

By 1685, the Pauls left for America, after having purchased 250 acres in Oxford Township, Philadelphia County, Province of Pennsylvania. Her husband continued to expand his land ownership, eventually forming a plantation located on Bristol Pike between Fox Chase and Frankford.[5]

Her husband was prominent in civic activities in Philadelphia County. With John Worrell in 1698, he was also appointed to purchase land for temporary meetings and to erect a permanent meeting house (Oxford Meeting).

Among their children were:[5]

  1. Ann (Paul) Knowles (born Paull, 21 September - Quaker 7th month - 1681, Ilminster, Somerset[6][7]), who married in 1705 John Knowles
  2. Joseph Paull (born 23 July - Quaker 5th month - 1683, Ilminster, Somerset[8][9]), who married in 1711 Elizabeth Roberts and secondly, Elizabeth Bridewell
  3. Henry Paul (4. 23. 1686, Oxford Township-1775), who married in 1716 Ann Gillingham
  4. John Paul (2. 1. 1689, Oxford Township-1721), who married in 1709 Mary Livezey
  5. James Paul (6. 11. 1692-1761), who married in 1716 Jean Wilmerton (died 1716), in 1723, he married Ann Jones (died 1739) and in 1743, married Sarah Morris

Margaret (Roberts) Paul died after her husband yeoman Joseph Paull, who wrote his will 4 June 1717 (proved in Philadelphia County 3 Sep 1717) in Oxford, Philadelphia County, a will in which she was named as sole executor with their son Joseph as assistant executor.[2] [5]

Research Notes

  • Oxford Township Monthly Meeting, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania is not yet listed in the available categories, but this was a fledgling meeting likely with small membership; it is noted as having been replaced by Abington Meeting, for which the location listed among categories states Jenkintown: it is unclear if this is the same location.
  • A source for her death date is needed.
