Biography

Charles was born in 1892. He was the son of John Roberts and Alice Meads. [1]

TROOPER C. F. V. ROBERTS. Trooper Charles Frederick Victor Roberts, of the Auckland Mounted Rifles, returned home from the front on March 14. Trooper Roberts is the son of Mrs. W. McLiesh. of Taylor Street, Cambridge, and left for the front with the Seventh Reinforcements. He was born at Masterton in 1892, and enlisted in May of last year. Prior to his being called up to go into camp he had been for some five years in the employ of Mesrs. Crowther and Bell, of Cambridge.[2]

He married Emma West in 1922 [3] The marriage was apparently not made in good faith

PROVISION FOR CHILD. NOT A SERIOUS CASE. Charles Frederick Victor Roberts, of Cambridge, was also before the Court with failure to meet maintenance responsibilities as the parent of a child, who is in the charge of a public institution. In a statement to the S.M. Roberts said he met his wife in Auckland at a registry office, she then having the child. He met his wife per the medium of a marriage agency's advertisement in a newspaper. He went to Auckland and met his prospective bride at the agency, being married three days later. The Magistrate (humorously): Did you take your wife to the registry office? Defendant: No, she took me! Defendant went on to state that when he talked about going back to Cambridge his wife refused to leave the city and he came back alone. Later on his wife came and spent a. week-end with him and then deserted him again. In reply to His Worship defendant said he earned 35/ per week, and out of this money he paid £1 per week to his mother for his keep. He was willing to pay 5/ per week for the keep of the child. The Magistrate made an order accordingly, to be paid monthly, .defendant agreeing to forthwith pay £1 for the past month's maintenance.[4]

He passed away in 1977 [5]
