Biography

Katherine married Stewart Ernst Brock, descended from a prominent Guernsey family, and related to an uncle of Gen. Sir Isaac Brock - Canadian Hero. S. E. Brock was brought up with the expectation he would inherit from a wealthy unmarried Uncle. The uncle then married in his late 50s and produced a male heir. S.E. turned to market gardening as a living, not always very successful, Owen mentions their rather precarious finances.

Katherine and Stewart's children were Ranulf (first name William but known as Ranulf by the close family), Hugh (worked for the Commonwealth Development Corporation in Nigeria then Kenya (Born 1920 died 2014)), and Owen (a lecturer in Astronomy at University of Aberdeen. His son David died young. The other son Geoffrey was in the Maths. dept. at Aberystwyth Uni, may have later moved to Hull Uni.)

My paternal grandparents Katharine (nee Temple - Roberts) and Stewart Ernst Brock lived in a flat in Montpelier Terrace, Cheltenham, until the late 1950s, S E Brock died 1955. I will see if I can find which number it was. If it is the same number. It may be that they took over the flat from Katharine's sister, Gwen and her husband, who had in turn taken it on from Gwen ( and Katharine's ) mother Susan Temple Roberts, who died in 1936. The flat was the upper two floors above the offices of a solicitor or accountant on the ground floor. From the outside a very gracious Georgian terraced building with wrought iron balcony railings on the first floor. Typical of many of the buildings from the heyday of Cheltenham as a spa town. Inside the flat with the exception of the kitchen which was a very cramped room off the dining room, the rooms were very generously sized with high ceilings. A nightmare to heat as there was no central heating. In fact the flat had few modern conveniences.
