DIVORCE. Doyle v. Doyle. — This was a suit brought by Amy Harriet Doyle for the dissolution of her marriage with Louis Doyle, lately a commercial traveller, on the grounds of cruelty, adultery, and drunkenness. - Mr. Reid appeared for the petitioner, and the respondent, who is at present undergoing a sentence of two years for false pretences, appeared in person and in custody. Respondent said he would complete his sentence on July next, and asked for a postponement of the case until the next sittings of the court to enable him to prepare a defence. Up to the time of his conviction his wife and he had lived on the most affectionate terms, and up to the time of receiving the petition all her letters were couched in terms of affection. He had reason to believe that there was a man at the bottom of the proceedings. - His Honor refused to grant the postponement, on the ground that respondent's attorney had been given an opportunity in March last to file a defence, and he had not done so. Petitioner then proceeded to give her evidence. She said she was married to the respondent on December 31, 1885. Six months after their marriage respondent commenced drinking, and used to ill treat her in a most cruel manner. He refused to provide her with clothing, and when she went out visiting her friends he attributed it to the basest motives, especially if she felt tired. He had said that he was not such a fool as to strike her, but he would strike the children to torture her and .give her the benefit of his tongue. He used to beat their little boy until, the blood would come from his (the boy's) legs, and he had to be taken to a doctor who threatened to hold respondent responsible if anything happened to the child. Both her children were born prematurely owing to his ill-treatment, and on one occasion she herself had to go to the hospital as a result of his brutality. One day he told her she was only his mistress, and the children were bastards, as he was already married. (On leaving the witness-box petitioner was seized with a fit of hysterics, and had to be carried out of court. Evidence was given as to respondent's adultery, and his. Honor granted the decree nisi, returnable in three months. His Honor remarked that the case was a most cruel and horrible one. (1853). BRAIDWOOD. . . . The two principal inns are occupied by Mr. J. J. Roberts and Mr. Andrew Badgery. At the former of these the mail halts, and there I took up my quarters. It is very commodious and well regulated, and through the obliging conduct of Mr. Roberts, the sojourners feel themselves quite at home. Mr. Badgery's house is also well managed, and divides with the Royal Hotel (the sign of Mr. R.'s inn) the chief business of the neighbourhood. The stores are well supplied with all the necessaries of life, and their proprietors vie with each other in keeping up a character for cheapness and completeness. I have been in no town off the main arteries of the colony so well furnished with accommodation of all kinds as Braidwood.
