Biography

Charlotte was born in the Bahamas in 1831 to Benjamin and Charlotte (Russel) Roberts. No records have been found in the Bahamas for the births of the children of Benjamin and Charlotte but they were residents of Abaco when they were married so it is possible that their children were born there.

A number of residents of Abaco immigrated to Key Vaca beginning in 1835. Benjamin and Charlotte and six of their children immigrated to the United States some time between 1835 and 1839, settling in Key Vaca. In 1840 many of the residents of Key Vaca moved to Key West due to the Indian Key massacre in August.

Young Charoltte married Joseph Stickney in Key West in 1847 [1]. At that point in time she was 16 years old and Joseph was 31 years old. They raised a family of five children, three boys and two girls. Their first born child, a girl named Charlotte after her mother and grandmother, died young.

Joseph died in 1870 leaving Charlotte to continue raising their children. Charlotte lived a long time after Joseph died. She died of senility in 1911. Her obituary in the Florida Times Union reported that she died in her home on Margaret Street. She was buried in the Key West Cemetery.

NOTE: Charlotte Roberts Stickney was proven as a Florida State Pioneer in the Florida State Genealogical Society, Pioneer Descendants Program in 2014.]
