I estimate Matlock was born about 1811 in Cumberland County, Kentucky or in North Carolina. I believe he was born to William Roberts and Elizabeth Cox with the following siblings:
Matlock's roots have proven elusive to prove and find. I have listed William Roberts and Elizabeth Cox as his mother due the fact that records show that Matlock is from both North Carolina and the Cumblerand area. From the Cumberland County - we find the following referring to guardianship.
We also have the rumor that Matlock's grandaughter Mattie Roberts married a cousin - Enoch Aboslum Roberts. Tracing Enoch's line backwards I find him to be the son of William Roberts - Matlock's brother William with some certainty.
We have found court records that refer to guardian ship for the family
From Cumberland County Circuit Court Records, Abstracted by Randolph N. Smith
p. 90 - July, 1829 Court Cyrus Walker appointed guardian of Matlock, Abraham & Elijah Roberts, 3 infants of William Roberts, dec.; F-281
Joseph & Charles Roberts - son of William Roberts are not in Ky.; F-282.
p. 95 - July, 1830 Court Cyrus Walker appointed guardian of Matlock Roberts, Elijah Roberts & Absalom Roberts, infant heirs of Will Roberts; F-377
p. 98 - October, 1830 Court Milton King appointed guardian for Matlock Roberts, Elijah Roberts, Absalum Roberts, infants of Wm. Roberts, deceased; F-440.
p. 91 October, 1829 Court
Robert Reid vs heirs of William Roberts; defend. Hiram Garrett & wife & William Roberts are not inhabitants of state; F-295.
p. 92 Abraham Speer vs heirs of William Roberts, dec.; def. Hiram Garret & wife Sally, Joseph Roberts, Charles Roberts & William Roberts, not inhab. of Ky.; F-323.
Following these leads I find that Sally Sarah Garret with Hiram Garrett reside in Jo Davies, Illinois.
Also in Jo Davies, Illinois we find an Absolum Roberts born about 1814. This Aboslum roberts did an interview - stating this Father William Roberts and mother died about 1828, and he had a brother named William.
Matlock opted to marry Zilphas around 1826. Together they had at least 13 children:
We find him living a consistent life as a farmer, but they were in a few locations.
In 1830 Lincoln, Tennessee, USA. He is in Liconln, Tennesee with 2 persons in the house - 1 male under 5, one male 15-19, 1 female 15-20, 3 family members this would be Matlock Zilpha and Milton.
In 1836 they are in Cannon, Tennessee, United States. , they owned no land or slaves and only minimal taxes were required to be paid
In 1850 North of Cumberland and East of Caney Fork Rivers, Smith, Tennessee. They are living North of Cumberland and East of Caney Fork Rivers in Smith, Tennessee. In the home are Matlock 40, Zelpha 40, Matlock Jr 19, Martha 15, Sarah 12, Washington 12, Catherine 9, Dianna 8, Jame 6, Pashal 2.
In 1860 District 11, Wilson, Tennessee. he confirms he was born in Kentucky, and their closest post office is Shop Spring, they are living i District 11 Wilson, Tennessee and he is 50 years old. In the home are Zilpha 50, Catharin 20, Diana 13, Jennnie Pink 13, Paschal 11, Amada 7, James 4. He confirms his parents are born from Kentucky, and again they state he comes from Tennessee, however evidence leads me to choose Kentucky with the court case, and the 1850 and 1880 census both confirmed Kentucky, this matches also the biography of Absalom Roberts.
In 1870 District 2, DeKalb, Tennessee, USA. He was living next door to his daughter Jennie in 1870. He is a farmer, living in DeKalb County, his personal estate is valued at about $600 and his real estate at $400. He is 60 and Zilpha is 55 however states he was born in Tennessee, this leads to me believe he didn't answer the census taker, perhaps James Henry did or a neighbor.
And in 1880 - . they were living next door to son James Henry. He lists himself as 70, with Zilpah 69. He confirms he was born in Kentucky and both parents hailed from South Carolina.
We first find record of death by his probate on 6 Jan 1890 in DeKalb, Tennessee, USA.
