Mrs. Carter, aged 63 dies near LaHarpe Funeral services were held at the Disco Methodist Church on Monday afternoon and other brief rites were conducted before burial at McIntyre Chapel, Franklin, Kentucky, yesterday at 10: A.M. for Mrs. Mary Isabella Carter,63, who succumbed at a rather extended illness at 1:00 A.M. Sunday, July 19, 1942, at the home of her son Oscar Carter, on the Riesel Sister's farm, in Durham township.

Mrs. Carter's migration to Illinois and the immediate community, where she had resided the past fifteen years, was preceded by tragedy. It was just 28 years ago, that during a fire at the family's residence in Kentucky her husband and their oldest son, Wash, burned to death in an effort to remove several head of livestock and mules from a burning barn.

Family members tell of how Mr. Carter and the oldest son had driven the stock to safety. Then, the animals became panic-stricken, and returned to the blazing structure. Following them into remove them again, the door latched behind, and falling timbers of the barn super structure held them captive for tragic death.

It was shortly after she came to Illinois and settled in a home of her own at Burnside, that Mrs. Carter's health began to fail, and she moved to the home of her son. Families of her eight surviving children were in the Disco Church on Monday to pay final respects at services, at which Rev. Richard C. Muhleman officiated; and several accompanied the remains to Kentucky for interment.

Sons and daughters left to mourn Mrs. Carter's passing: James and Oscar, both of near LaHarpe; Leonard of Niota; Crit of Colchester, Thula (Mrs. C.M. Petty) and Aggie (Mrs. Ed Henson) of La Harpe; Mrs. Pearl McCarty of near Aledo, Mrs. Nettie Smith of Kentucky. Mrs. Carter as Mary Isabelle Roberts, was born near Franklin, Kentucky a daughter of Wash and Mary Ann (Parker) Roberts, on December 13, 1873.
