Conflicts

It was previously thought that Ida and Ezikiel were Annie's, but in fact Ezikial's birth record states Martha Smith, which is either Matilda Smith or likely another wife.

Biography

The early years

Annie Roberts was born in March of 1835 to Matlock Roberts and Zilpha Bain

It is believed there may have been 17 children, however to date I have only found 12 children:

Family Life

Annie would first marry James W Carnett on the 12th of April 1850 in Smith, Tennessee[3] and they would have children:

She would become step-mother to John's existing children:

In 1870[4] we find her in Crittenden, Kentucky, with an occupation of a Spinster. She confirms she was born in Tennessee, and we must assume that James has passed away as he is not listed on the census. In the home are Anna 36, Matlock 11, William 8, James 5 and Clifton 3.

In 1880[5] we find them in Eagle Creek, Gallatin, Illinois. She has remarried John T Deniston, and becomes step mother to his children. In the home are John 43, Annie 40, John H Deniston 15 (Step child), Walter Deniston 13 (Step child), Kittie Deniston 11 (Step child) , Ida 9, Ezekiel 7, Clifton 4(I am assuming they mean 14, unless her son with James had passed away and she had another child with the same first name 10 years later.

In 1900[7] she was living in Mountain, Saline, Illinois and confirmed she had had 8 children of which 5 survived. We know that Mary, Effrom, Ida and James survived. which means that William, Clifton or Ezikiel also survived . She is living with her son J. P., who is 35, his wife Francis 29, Cora 9, Jessie 7, Nora 3, Dora 2 and youngest daughter Flora a few months old, and her son J.P's brother-in-law Charlie Clayton 19..

Death

Annie died the 8th of October 1914 in Saline County, Illinois.

DNA

  • Maternal relationship is confirmed through Mitochondrial DNA test results on Family Tree DNA. MS, FTDNA kit # 948833, and her 3rd cousin 2x removed, XX, have an exact HVR1, HVR2 and Coding Region match, thereby confirming their direct maternal lines back to their most-recent common ancestor who is Zilpha Bain, the 2x great grandmother of MS and 4x great grandmother of XX.
