Thomas, his older brother, James M and their father, Alvin, all joined the Union Army, Illinois, Company I, 29th Infrantry. Thomas enlisted January 1, 1864. He mustered in 27 February 1864 and by the time he mustered out on 6 November 1864 he had been a corporal for a month.
