Revolutionary War Veteran
Zaccheus Roberts was the son of Edward Roberts of Pennsylvania. His mother's name is unknown. Zaccheus was a Revolutionary War Soldier who fought in South Carolina in the war for American Independence. He was in the Battle of Fort Moultrie, the Battle of Hanging Rock and the Battle of Eutaw Springs.
The pension application of Zaccheus's widow, Nancy Brashears Roberts states that he served under the following officers in the Revolutionary War: Capt. Eli Cashaw [Kershaw], Lt. Col. Mason [James Mayson] and Col. Thompson. Records for Capt. Kershaw and Lt. Col. Mason and Col. Thompson state that they were in the 3rd South Carolina Rangers.
Acting upon the best information available at the time, descendants of Zaccheus placed a stone in the Roberts Cemetery believing that was his actual burial place. A notation in the book "Roberts Families of Roane County" by Snyder Roberts, and the fact that several of Zaccheus's children are buried there made identification of his burial place as accurate as could be determined at the time of placement. Zaccheus's good friend, Hezekiah Love, who also served in the Revolutionary War is also buried in the Roberts Cemetery. It has been discovered since that time that the actual burial place of Zaccheus is some distance away on the Zaccheus Roberts homeplace at The Preserve on the Clinch, formerly Rarity Ridge.
