-Maine was part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts until 1820, when it voted to secede from Massachusetts to become a separate state.[4]
-North Berwick was not set apart from Berwick until 1831.[5]
-It is common for vital records during this time period to be record in the State of Maine. Death records, particularly, may record North Berwick as a place of birth for a person who was born in that portion of Berwick that later became North Berwick. FindAGrave's page may be of use to support Lois' date of birth; but North Berwick cannot be her legitimately correct place of birth.
Parents: Per Find a Grave and "Doughty Falls, The History of the Town of North Berwick," Lois' father is Thomas Roberts born 28 July 1777 in Dover, New Hampshire and died 3 Sep 1831 in North Berwick, Maine. Her mother was Elizabeth Quint born about 1786 and died 28 Jan 1859 in North Berwick.[1][6]
Siblings: Possible siblings found for Lois include:[6]
"J" a brother born 28 May 1806 and died 10 Nov 1825.
Stephen Roberts, born 24 Mar 1808. Married Hannah Quint and had seven children. See the 1850 Census below which specifies the names and ages of 6 of the 7 children.[7]
Betsy born 12 June 1810 and died 2 March 1884. See Research Notes: Family Connection.
First Marriage: 10 Mar 1832 Intentions of Marriage to Isaiah Ford are published in North Berwick where the are both residing. Lois' brother Stephen Roberts' marriage intentions are filed on the same day just below her's in the same ledger.[8]
Children of Lois and Isaiah: The following children have been found for this couple:[9][10] The first two sons are recorded in the North Berwick town ledger just below the birth of her brother Stephen Roberts' first 3 sons.
A daughter Loisa has been mentioned, but without birth or death dates.[11]
1840 Census, North Berwick, Maine:[12] Lois, Isaiah and their three sons ages correspond to this tally. Isaiah's father Stephen Ford is living nest door.[13] On the other side of Stephen Ford is Stephen Roberts who is Lois brother.
1850 Census:[14] The couple continue to live in the same house as 1840 based on neighbors. Lois and Isaiah, age 39, and a farmer have two of their son's in there home: James and Caleb; and a 65 year old pauper John Applebee. It is unclear what if any relationship John is to the family. On the same census page are:
- Joshua Ford and family. Lois' husband's brother.
-Ira Ford, his sister Lydia Ford are Isaiah's Uncle and Aunt and Uncle. Also in there home is Ira's and their mother Rachel (Quint) Ford.
-Lorenzo Ford , age 12, (Lois' son is living in a multigenerational home with Isaiah's parents Stephen and Lydia (Grant) Ford. Also living in Isaiah's parents home is his brother Stephen Ford Jr; his sister Sarah Ford;[15] and Fanny Goodwin, age 46. Fanny's relationship is unknown; but Lois husband's great grandmother was Mary (Goodwin) Ford.
- Jemima (Ford) Quint and her daughter Melinda. Jemima is Lois husband's first cousin once removed. Her son is James and and her grandchildren are living next door.
-Widower James Quint. In his home are his daughters Sarah L Quint and Orinda Quint. Sarah will evenutally marry Lois and Isaiah's son Lorenzo; and Orinda will marry Isaiah's nephew Joshua Ford.
-On the following sheet of the census, page 24/692:
Death of First Husband: 9 Mar 1851 Lois first husband Isaiah Ford passed away. He, "was drowned . . . when the horse, upon which he was crossing some lake, broke through the ice."[16][17]
Second Marriage: 5 Nov 1853 Lois marries Stephen Ford Jr in South Berwick, Maine with Rev, B.R. Allen presiding. Both Lois and Stephen are living in North Berwick.[18][19] 5 Nov 1853 Stephen Ford and Mrs. Lois (Roberts) Ford publish marriage intentions in North Berwick.[20] Stephen is the brother of Lois' deceased first husband Isaiah Ford. Family members can be track from 1860 through the 1880 Census which lists relationships for the first time.[21][2]
1860 Census, North Berwick:[25] Lois and Stephen Ford Jr "2nd" are living in the multigeneration home of her in-laws Stephen and Lydia Ford. Their neighbors have mostly remained the same since 1840. Stephen Jr's father no longer owns real estate, but Stephen Jr. does. Both men farm for the rest of their lives. The word "domestic" appears to mean keeping house at home. The household is recorded on lines 20 - 30:
-Susan Grant, age 68. This could possibly by Stephen, Jr's Aunt, his mother Lydia (Grant) Ford's sister. Although the age is slightly off.[26]
-Lois (Roberts) Ford, age 48, domestic.
-Fanny Goodwin, age 50.
-Ida Ford, age 5, relationship unknown. "The Valley of the Shadow" explicitly indicates that this is not Lois' granddaughter. Census 1870, 1800 and FindAGrave confirm James R Ford II's daughter Ida was not born until 1861.[27]
-Lorenzo Ford, age 23, shoemaker, Lois and Isaiah's son
-Lois and Isaiah's son Caleb F Ford, age 19, stone cutter.
-Stephen Jr's cousin, Ira Ford, Jr, age 16, farmer.[28]
-Lois and her husbands' extended families have remain in the same neighborhood from the time of 1840 Census through the 1870 Census. In 1860 the census was taken in a different order from 1850 and 1870.
-In 1860 the following appear on page 20 of the census.[29]
-In 1850, on page 23 Stephen Ford Jr himself in the household of his parents; James Quint and family; Lois and her first husband Isaiah Ford and their children. On page 24: Daniel Quint's family; and Lois' brother Stephen Roberts and family. On page 22 of the 1850 Census are: Daniel and Elizabeth Abbott see lines 31 - 32; and Elanore, Robert, John and Joshua Staples on lines 34 -37.[14] On the 1870 Census, these same people, of the appropriate ages, appear on page 24 with Lois and her husband Stephen Ford and family; Daniel Quint's family; and Lois' brother Stephen Roberts and family. On page 23 of the 1870 Census are: Daniel and Elizabeth Abbott on lines 30 and 32; and Robert, Elanore (Ellen), Joshua and John Staples on lines 21 and 25 - 27.
1870 Census, North Berwick:[30] Lois' husband continues to farm and owns real estate. On page 24:
-Line 13: Albion Ford, age 12, Lois and Stephen's son.
-Line 14 -15: Sylvester Ford age 16 and Ida Ford age 9 are Lois' grandchildren. Their parents are Lois' son James R Ford II and his first wife Mary (Quint) Ford[11]
-Line 16: Ira Grant, age 37, shoe maker, is a first cousin to husband Stephen Ford Jr, Lois' mother-in-law's nephew, Peter Grant's son. He is enumerated as his cousin on the 1880 Census.Descendants of Peter Grant, (Scottish Exile) of Kittery, York, Maine .[26][21]
-Lines 17 and 18: Joshua Ford and his wife Orinda (Quint) Ford both age 22, husband Stephen Jr's nephew.[31]
-Lines 30 - 35: Lois' brother Stephen Roberts. Within his household is Lois' granddaughter Cora Ford, age 7, Lorenzo Ford's daughter.[6]
-Lines 36 - 40: continuing to page 23, line 1 are Cora Ford's (from line 35) parents Lorenzo and Sarah (Quint) Ford and the rest of their children.
-On page 25, just under Lorenzo's daughter Viola Ford, on lines 2 - 6: Lois' son Caleb F Ford, age 20, and his family.
1880 Census, North Berwick:[21] Living in the same home, or an attached building with similar neighbors. From 1840 to 1880, it appears to be a situation where property is being divided amoung family members versus people actually moving.
-Page 3C:

Death: 2 Jan 1882 Lois (Roberts) Ford passed away at the age of 69 years and 1 month. She is buried with her second husband Stephen and their son Albion Ford in a different small Ford Cemetery than her first husband. This cemetery is on Ford-Quint Road, North Berwick, Maine.[1][2]
Research Notes
A birth record and death record are required for Lois.
A marriage record for first husband Isaiah Ford is required. Only marriage intentions have been found.
If there is a daughter Loisa from the marriage of Lois and Isaiah Ford, sources are required.
Family Connection: "Doughty Falls, The History of the Town of North Berwick"[6] suggests that two sisters have married brothers. Lois (Roberts) Ford has a sister to Betsy Roberts. A Betsy or Betsey (Roberts) Ford married Peter G. Ford who is Lois husbands' brother.[15]. Would like to find source documents to confirm or refute that that Lois' and Betsey (Roberts) Ford have the same parents.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Lois by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Lois:
Yes! Both a birth and death record are needed for Lois. Thank You. Found burial in North Berwick. A hint on Ancestry and a book I had on my shelf gave me enough information to start cross referencing census. I change the suggested parents within her bio. Your comment was truly helpful. Please don’t hesitate to add sources and edit this profile or any other.
