Biography

When Joshua D Roberts was born in 1812 in Pulaski, Kentucky, his father, James, was 48 and his mother, Margaret, was 49. He married Nancy Matilda Bernard on June 19, 1843, in Russell, Kentucky. They had one child during their marriage. He died in 1879 in Casey, Kentucky, at the age of 67.

Will of James Roberts dated 9th March 1829 recorded in Pulaski County, Kentucky. Leaves land and movable belongings to well beloved wife, Margaret during her life and after to be divided between 1) Joshua Roberts and 2) Asahell Roberts (Neither Joshua nor Asahell is called son in the will) Then leaves: 3) one dollar to well beloved son David Roberts; 4) one dollar to well beloved daughter Elizabeth __rton (torn); 5) one dollar to well beloved daughter Anne West; (Married William West on 5 Jan 1811 in Pulaski Co) 6) one dollar to well beloved daughter Rachel Burton; (Married Robert Burton on 6 Mar 1813 in Pulaski Co) 7) one dollar to well beloved daughter Margaret Thomas; (Married Evan Thomas on 5 Dec 1815 in Pulaski Co) 8) one dollar to well beloved son James Roberts; (Possibly the James Roberts who married Polly Locket on 10 Feb 1818 in Pulaski Co) 9) one dollar to well beloved son John Roberts; (Possibly the John Roberts who married Matilda Raney on 15 Nov 1821 in Pulaski Co) 10) all land south of Wagon Road west of Spring Branch to well beloved son Daniel Roberts 11) all land south of Wagon Road east of Spring Branch to well beloved son Henry Roberts

He then “utterly disallows, revokes, disanuls all and every other former testaments, wills, legacies, bequeaths and exactons (?) by me in any wise before mentioned, willed and bequeathed.”

Witnessed by Samuel Cambess, Sen. and Samuel Cambess (it reads as “Cambess” but see below)

On Monday 18th day of May 1829, Samuel Cambest, Jun. gave oath that it was the last will and testament of James Roberts, deceased. On 17th day of August 1829, Samuel Cambest, Sen. gave oath to the same effect.

Thus James Roberts’ possible family structure is given and shows that he died betwee 9 March 1829 and 18 May 1829.
