Biography

Sally Carter Roberts was born 30 Nov 1794 in Amherst County, Virginia.[1] She was the daughter of Joseph Roberts and his third wife Sally Brown Hardy .[2]

In the name of God amen, I Joseph Roberts of Nelson County and State of Virginia being weak in body though of perfect mind and sound memory, so inasmuch this my last Will and Testament, in manner and form following, To Wit,

Item 1st my will and desire is that all my just debts and Funeral expenses are to be paid out of my Estate.

Item 2nd my son Alexander Roberts has received his proportional part out of my estate consisting of Land, Negroes and stock of different kind.

Item 3rd my son John Roberts has also received his proportional part out of my estate consisting of Land, Negroes and Stock of different kind.

Item 4th I give my son Joseph Roberts together with what he has already received, one half of all my lands lying in the State of Kentucky.

Item 5th I give my son Thomas Roberts a part of the Land designated by the name of Carpenters Tract the boundaries of this land area as follow. To wit, one line beginning on Michael Woods land running to the top of the mountain, dividing the said Carpenters Land from the tract I know live on thence running with the top of the mountain to Alexander McAlexanders line. I also give him one hundred and twenty one pounds ten shillings to be paid to his heirs on or before the first day of January Eighteen hundred and fourteen, also one house now in his possession and other stock to the value of what I gave to my other sons likewise one bed and furniture.

Items 6th I give to my son Henry Roberts the other half of all my lands lying in the State of Kentucky, and one Negro also one horse and saddle and other stock and furniture equal to what I have given my other sons.

Item 7th I give to my son James Roberts the tract of land lying on the south side of Lackey's mountain to a line formerly called John Harris's Green Mountain. Also I give one Negro ane horse saddle and other stock and furniture again with the rest of my sons when he becomes of age or marries.

Items 8th I give my son George Roberts that part of my land known by the name of Lackey's Tract to be delivered to him with one Negro one horse and stock and furniture equal with what I have given to my other sons when he becomes of age.

Item 9th I give my son William C Roberts one half of the tract of land I now live on not including the dwelling house with one Negro one horse saddle and other stock equal with the rest to be delivered to him when he becomes of age.

Item 10th I give to my daughter Sally C Roberts two Negro girls Eale and Louisa with one horse saddle furniture with other stock equal to what given my other daughters when she be of age or marry.

Item 11th I give to my daughter Flora B Roberts one Negro girl called Tilola and one other Negro one horse saddle bed and furniture and other stock equal with my other daughters to have when she may become of age or marry.

Item 12th I give to my daughter Susanna B Roberts one Negro girl called Ebelina and one other Negro one horse saddle bed and furniture with stock of equal value with any other daughters to have when she may become of age or marry.

Item ?. I give to my beloved wife Sarah Roberts all the remaining part of any land not yet disposed of including the dwelling house also all the personal estate during her life or widowhood and at her death the land is to be ??? by William C Roberts the personal estate is to be equally divided between my daughters Mary Carter, Elizabeth Skelton, Nancy Hughes, Sally C Roberts, Flora B Roberts and Susanna B Roberts.

Lastly I constitute and appoint my wife Sarah Roberts, Alexander Roberts and Thomas Roberts as executors to this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have set my and ??? my seal this Second day of December one thousand Eight hundred and Eleven.

At a Court held for Nelson County the 23rd day of December 1811. This Last will and Testament of Joseph Roberts deceased was produced in Court and proved by the oaths of Robert J Kincaid and Michael Woods two subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of Sarah Roberts the Executrix and Alexander Roberts of the Executors in said will mentioned, who made other (and were qualified according to law) and together with Michael Woods, William Lee Harris and William H. Mosby their securities ?? into ?? a knowledge of their bond in the penalty of Twenty thousand dollars current money conditioned by the law. direct certificate is granted them for obtaining probate of said will in due force of law. She could be the kinswoman, Sally Roberts, named in the will of her half sister Mary (Roberts) Carter. She is somehow related, as she was referenced from the Knight family bible.
