Thomas was born about 1824 in the Bahamas to parents who were both born in the Bahamas. He was a mariner He married Elizabeth Russell He passed away in 1892 and is buried in tract 5, lot 73 of the Key West Cemetery. In 1957 Thomas' paternal grand daughter, Louise Roberts (living in Marsh Harbour, Abaco) wrote, "The Roberts came from Belfast, Ireland - three brothers wrecked here and decided to make Hope Town their home - William Thomas and John. Thomas was Bert's great-grand father. The Russells also came from Ireland. There are no Russells [sic] in the Bahamas that belongs to that family only Bert's grandfather Roberts descendents, all the others went to Key West."
Y-STR results indicate Thomas was born in the Bahamas because his direct paternal line descendants match several other direct paternal Roberts lines from Harbour Island, Eleuthera which trace back prior to Thomas' birth.

Thanks for your hard work on the ground in ancestry research. I'm constantly amazed at your organization ability, which no doubt serves you well in your professional life, too. You SEEM like a relative. My late father in Key West told me his grandmother Ellen Roberts Lowe had northern Irish Protestant ancestry. I did not know about any Roberts ancestors from southern Ireland until I started ancestry research 18 months ago. My mother told me that my father told her only that he had English, Northern Irish and Scottish ancestry in the Bahamas. Many photos of the Roberts family members in the Bahamas look a lot like me and my siblings. Leonard Benjamin Roberts, contributor to "Wild Key West" shares 394 centimorgans with me, longest block 67. My 5th cousin Peter J. Roberts, DNA expert, helped me get my Y-DNA test and GEDmatch account. My 4th cousin Phil Roberts has helped me in many ways, too. I owe both of them many thanks. I get preoccupied with my paternal line Lowe ancestry, but my father was more Roberts, Curry and Sands than anything else.
Your 3rd cousin,
