She was a very old and highly respected resident of the Mount View district, and retained all her mental faculties up to the last. She often related how her father, two sisters and a brother, all younger than herself, had to face a new country motherless, and she related their trying trip to the Burra copper mines, where her father was under contract to build for the company.
Later they went to the Bendigo gold diggings, where she married the late Mr. James McGann, who was then in business with the late James Tyson. She often told stirring stories of the pioneering days in Victoria, especially about the Bendigo diggings.About the year 1854 she came to Maitland with her husband, and they went on the land.
Then they removed to Cessnock, and in 1868 took up their present homestead at Mount View. They were the first settlers there. The place was at that time a dense forest, wild cattle and kangaroos being the chief occupants of a place that is now dotted with beautiful farms, orchards and vineyards.
The deceased is survived by six sons— William and Andrew (Mount View), Gervase and Thomas (Lithgow), John (Annandale, Sydney), and Luke (Auckland, New Zealand).
There are also six daughters— Mrs. G. Collins (Branxton), Mrs. G. J. Robertson (Northwood. Lane Cove, Sydney), Mrs. W. Fyfe Henderson (Mosman), Sister Mary James (St. Joseph's Convent, Lochinvar), and Misses C. and E. McGann (Mount View).
There are 41 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
One sister, Mrs. Roberts, of Bendigo, also survives. Ten of her grandsons and one of her sons-in-law joined the A.I.F., and two paid the supreme sacrifice. One, an Anzac has just returned after fighting for nearly five years. Another is on his way home. The interment was made in the Roman Catholic, cemetery at Cessnock, the Rev. Father Callaghan officiating, assisted by the Rev. Father Hugh Cullen, an old friend of the family.
