Biography

Richard was born in 1821, and was Christened 01/10/1821. Richard first appears in the 1841 Census aged 21 in North Muskham B. 1821 and employed as a Male Servant. So far nothing can be found of him in the 1851 Census but in 1861 he has a wife Rebecca and 4 children, Abigail, John,Susan and George and was born in Monkham??... (I cannot find any trace of a town/village called Monkam and have to assume a scanning error). Rebecca was born in Norwell which is 13 kms from Markham and 4 kms from Muskham which leads to the latter as favorite for Richards birth. At this time his occupation is given as Maltster and address as Gyles Row, Moorgate, Clarborough Nottinghamshire.

In the 1871 census his birth place is given as Battley which must be another scanning error for Bathley is 1.5 kms from Muskham, further confirmation of birthplace. The 2 girls, Susan and Abigail have "disappeared" leaving the two sons at home on Spital Hill Clarborough, occupation, maltsters labourer. An Abigail Roberts possibly marries in 1876 in Retford.

In the 1881 census he is still living on Spital Hill with wife Rebecca and youngest son George although his birthplace is given as Rathley Northamtonshire (scanning error for Bathley Nottinghamshire) and Rebecca as Norwich (Norwell?) Northamtonshire which is of course in Norfolk. As a point of interest son George is listed as an "Iron Turner" which is the old name for my profession, CenterLathe Turner.

No further trace of Richard in the Census and a Death occurred of Richard Roberts in 1886, East Retford and it is fairly safe to assume it is him.
