Walter was the son of Charles Roberts and Mary Elizabeth Buckhalter.
Walter W. Roberts and Minnie Lee Taylor were united in marriage on the 30 June 1940 at the Methodist Church in Kreole, Jackson County, Ms. They were the parents of four children.
A family story about Walter Roberts as a young boy his father Charlie was hauling dirt to form the Highway or railroad foundation, the family would travel along the route, sometimes living in tents. Charlie and his sons would haul dirt in a wagon pulled by mules to form the road foundation. Charlie's son Walter was the youngest boy at that time who was old enough to help with the chores, his job was to carry water in water pails from creeks or etc. for the family's use and for the mules. Walter became known as "water boy". Many years later Walter went to Neshoba county to visit family he hadn't seen in many years, when they saw him in their excitement they exclaimed, "That's water boy".
