Mustered out: 15 Aug 1864 (died)
Side: USA
Regiment(s): Co. B, 133rd Ohio National Guard

James Roberts was born about 1824 in Perry County, Ohio, United States of America.[1] His parents have not yet been identified.

James married Arena Cook on 23 Sep 1846 in Franklin County, Ohio.[2] They had six known children:

  1. Jane Roberts (1847-1860)
  2. Emma Roberts (1848-1867)
  3. George Roberts (1853-1880)
  4. Elizabeth (Roberts) Souder (1856-1937)
  5. Hattie Roberts (1858-1861)
  6. Ella (Roberts Baughman Swickard) Cole (1863-1926)

In 1850, James's family seems to have been enumerated twice in the census, in both Plain Township, Franklin County, Ohio[3] and Lima Township, Licking County, Ohio.[4] James was listed as a farmer in Plain Twp and a stone cutter in Lima.

In 1860, his family was living in Lincoln, Logan County, Illinois, where he was working as a farmer.[5]

During the American Civil War, James enlisted in the Union army for one hundred days' service as a private in the 133rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company B, on 2 May 1864.[6] He died a few months later, on 15 Aug 1864, from "cerebral congestion" in a military hospital in Washington, D.C.[7] He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.[8][9]

Research notes

  • Birth date: All records indicate that James was born in the 1820's, but the exact year given varies between 1820 and 1827, as follows:
    • 1850 census in Lima gives an estimated birth year of 1820.
    • 1850 census in Plain Township gives an estimated birth year of 1824.
    • 1860 census gives an estimated birth year of 1827.
    • His military records generally list his age as 40. Since his service was all within the year 1864, this gives an estimated birth year of 1824.
  • Middle Name: Other online trees often erroneously give him the middle name "Polk". There are no sources to support this middle name. It seems to have come from erroneously attaching this picture of a different James Polk Roberts who died during the American Civil War.
