Biography
Alfred is listed in various census records as having been born in 1875. The only birth record found is for an Alfred William born Middlesbrough, registered in Quarter 4 of 1875 but with a mother's maiden name of Wilson. [1] As his father William had a rather colourful love life he could well have had a mother who was neither William's Wife or Partner. It could also be a mistranscription of Bason, the maiden name of William's 'wives'.
In 1891 he was living at home. His parents are listed as William and Elizabeth (who was blind) but they could have been William and Agnes. William was an Iron Worker and Alfred, aged 15, was a Fishmonger. [2]
In 1900 Alfred married Mary Alice Hicks. Their marriage was registered in Middlesbrough. [3]
In 1911 the couple had been married for 10 years and had a daughter, Edith Annie (perhaps named after his sister). Alfred was a Loco fireman. [4] Alfred was still a Steam Riser in 1939, when he and Mary lived in Middlesbrough with Ada (perhaps a grand daughter) [5]
An Alfred W Roberts died aged 83 in 1958. His death was registered in Middlesbrough. [6]
