Alexander was a member of the first court of Lincoln ---afterwards Mercer--- County; was elected a delegate to the Virginian Convention in 1788 (called to ratify the Federal Constitution; and also a member of the House of Burgess immediately succeeding the sessions of this convention.
In 1792, he was elected the first sheriff of Mercer County. He died when he was not quite 54 years of age, on August 15, 1802. His wife, Margaret Robinson Robertson, survived him many years, dying at 92 in 1846.
Alexander and Margaret's struggles are documented in George Robertson's first address [First Settlement of Kentucky, July 4, 1843] before an assembly of 20,000 persons at Camp Madison, Franklin County, Kentucky
George and Margaret's grandparents had pushed the boundaries of Virginia westward to the foot of the Alleghany mountains (1740). Alexander (father to George and Martha) was born in the mid 18th century while settling the lands west of the Ohio River. In 1779 they immigrated with their family to that part of Kentucky which has since come to be known as "Blue Grass" region. In 1795, the treaty of Greenville opened the lands of "Ohio" (that land west of the Ohio River) to rightful purchase and settlement of formerly Indian held lands.
