Joab Robertson was born in North Carolina about 1782. By 1830 he had moved to Pittsylvania, Virginia but was single at this time. Potential relatives appear on the same page; two Samuel Robertsons and a George Robertson.
On June 4 of 1831 in Pittsylvania, Joab married Nicey Shackleford. By 1840, the Pittsylvania census showed the couple had 3 boys under 5, and 2 girls under 5.
The 1850 census of Pittsylvania would show the following children for Joab and Nicey:
Wife Nicey Robertson passed away, likely 1851, as Joab remarried on February 3, 1852 in Pittsylvania to Dorcas Richards. The 1860 southern Pittsylvania census would show Joab and Dorcas, with Nicey's sons Henry, Samuel, and Daniel. A Mary Richards was also in the home, probably Dorcas' sister.
Son Joab Robertson, Jr. enlisted in the 57th Virginia Infantry in 1862, and not long after, he contracted Typhoid Fever, and died in a Richmond hospital in August of 1862.
Sons Daniel, Henry, and likely William enlisted in the CSA in 1861, joining the 38th Virginia Infantry, Company K. Daniel was killed in the Battle of Gettysburg July 3, 1863. Henry was seriously wounded. Henry was brought back to Virginia, but would die of his wounds in a Richmond hospital in August of 1863.
A William T. Robertson also of Company K of the 38th is likely Joab's son as well. William survived the war.
