Biography

Margaret was born about 1598 daughter to Archibald Roberton of Stonehall, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Margaret married Mr David Dickson, son and heir of John Dickson of Busbie, on 23 September 1617[1]. They had at least seven sons and possibly daughters as well.

  1. John (abt 1620 - 1653), clerk to the Exchequer
  2. Archibald (abt 1622 - )
  3. James (abt 1624 - )
  4. David ( abt 1626 - before 1662)
  5. Alexander (abt 1628 - ), of Wester Binnie, Minister of Newbattle
  6. Robert (abt 1630 - abt 1700)
  7. Andrew (abt 1632 - )

Mr David Dickson was minister at Irvine. When his father died, he was retoured his heir of Busbie[2].

In 1647, Sir David Cunningham of Robertland granted a wadset to Mr David Dickson, professor of divinity in College of Edinburgh and Margaret Roberton, his spouse, of the lands of Fulschaw in the parish of Stewarton and sheriffdom of Ayr.[3]

When her husband died in late 1662, Margaret was executrix of his estate.

The widow Margaret Roberton as executrix of Mr David Dickson of Busbie, professor of divinity in College of Edinburgh, made Factories in 1663 to Mr Alexander Dickson of Wester Binnie, professor of Hebrew in that College, her son, and by Mr Archibald Dickson his brother, to him to manage specified affairs. [4]

On 27 October 1664, Margaret Roberton assigned various sums of money to her sons Mr Archibald Dickson and Mr Alexander Dickson. These transactions were finally settled in May 1668 by which time Margaret had deceased[5].

Margaret died about 1666.

Research Notes

The Analecta Scotica of 1837 on page 58 gives her name as Christian[6]. This seems to be an error. There is an error in naming her sons, as it repeats the name of Archibald.

This was created by copying an entry from Ancestry.com which was erroneous. It should read Margaret Roberton.

ie Roberton NOT Robertson. Same applies to her father Archibald. See proper sources

Robertson-16188 and Robertson-8711 appear to represent the same person because: same first name, last name, spouse, son.
