Biography

Birth

Margaret Robertson was born about 1850 in Wick^[1] to Alexander Robertson, a Shoemaker, and Elizabeth Coghill who were married in Wick on 11 Jun 1847.^[2]

Early life

Margaret lived with her family at 2 Brown Place in Wick^[3] and by 1861 the household included 6 children: Ann (age 12), Margaret (age 10), Elizabeth (age 8), Alex (age 5), David (age 3), William (age 1).^[4]

In 1871, Margaret is listed as the head of the household and a dressmaker.^[3] Her brothers David and William, now 13 and 11 years old, live with her and are listed as scholars in the census.^[3]

Family

Margaret is listed as Maggie and a Domestic Servant in the record of her marriage to Alexander Bain, listed as a Cooper, at the Original Secession Church Manse on Princes Street in Thurso on 17 Sep 1877.^[5]

By 1891, the family had grown to include 6 children: William (age 13), Elizabeth (age 11), Jane (age 9), John A. (age 7), David (age 5), Maggie Ann (age 2).^[6]

It seems that from time to time they opened their home to her family members since in 1881 her brothers Alexander and David are listed in the census with them^[7] and Alexander is listed with them again as a visitor in 1901.^[8]

Margaret's husband, Alexander, died on 3 Mar 1911 at 3:00 p.m. ^[9]

Death

Margaret died at 7:30 p.m. on 17 Nov 1932 at 12 Back Bridge Street, Wick. Her death record states she was 74 years old, but we know she was closer to 82 based on earlier census data. Her cause of death is listed as cerebral hemorrhage.^[10]
