Biography

A sworn inventory and appraisal of his personal estate was presented a Hardy County Court on 19th September, 1810. It was ordered to be recorded by the Court on 11 December, 1810. Further an account of the settlement of his estate was recorded by the Court on 12 February 1811. The net value of his estate was $517.00. (1).

Blaze and his daughter Nancy both died in what is now Hardy County, West Virginia and were buried in Wilkins Cemetery, near Lost River. The inscriptions in this cemetery were transcribed in December 1967. The cemetery was located approximately one mile from Lost River on the Kimsey's Run Road and about one-half mile south of the road. The farm had once belonged to Joseph Wilkins (died 1839) and at the time of the transcription was owned by a Mathias family. This cemetery and the old Kimsey's Run Road are now submerged beneath the reservoir of the Kimsey's Run dam. A few of the stones, including the Robertson stones, were removed to the Mennonite Community Cemetery on West Virginia route 259 south of Mathias.

Ruth and Chelsea Dinn published photographs of the Robertson gravestones in an addendum to the Robertson-Hamilton History and Genealogy (1976), a copy of which is in the Brownstown, Indiana, Public Library. (2)

(Note, the Cemetery is Salem Mennonite Church Cemetery, 3832 Parker Hollow Road, Baker, Hardy County, West Virginia, 26801 USA)

There is a memorial headstone for him in the Robertson Cemetery Seymour, Jackson County, Indiana, USA (3)

Upon the disposal of his estate during 1810 it is recorded that his goods and chattels were sold. The Sale Bill lists the purchasers with approximately 90% of items being purchased by his wife and family (ie Hannah, John, William, James, Rebecca and Rachel) with John buying more than 50% of it. (4)

Note

He was the eldest son of John Robertson from Northumberland in England. The story goes that he was to inherit the family estate from his father but his uncle had designs on the property and shipped the young Blaze (aged 15 or 16) on a boat to Virginia where he was bound to a planter until he was 21.

He was a recruiting officer and supplier during the Revolutionary War which means that anyone who is a descendant can claim to be either a Son of the Revolution or a Daughter of the Revolution.

His Headstone reads "Blaze Robertson 1742-1810" on Front side of stone, and the back of stone "His Daughter Nancy Robertson".

Blaze and Nancy both died in West Virginia and were buried in Wilkins Cemetery, near Lost River. This cemetery now lies beneath the reservoir of the Kimsey's Run Dam. The cemetery stones were moved to the Mathias Mennonite Community Cemetery on West Virginia Route 259 south of Mathias, WV.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Blaze by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Blaze:
