Biography

James Robins or James Robbins was born on 9 February 1826 in Upton Lovell, Wiltshire, England the son of William Robins, a labourer living in Upton, and Sarah Whatley. He was christened on 4 March 1827 at the Independent Congregational Church, Heytesbury, Wiltshire, England.[1][2]

When the census was taken in 1841 James was recorded as age 14 born in Wiltshire. He is living with his parents in Upton Lovell, Wiltshire, England.

In 1846 James was employed as a labourer and lived in Heytesbury, Wiltshire, England. He married Elizabeth Cowdry on 31 December 1846 in Heytesbury, Wiltshire, England. He was 19 and she was 22.[3][4]

James and Elizabeth Cowdry had 2 children when the 1851 census was enumerated Emily Sophia Robins and Frederick James Robbins. He was still employed as a farm labourer and they had settled in Mill Street, Heytesbury, Wiltshire, England.

Ten years later when the 1861 census was enumerated the family had moved and were living in Frome Road, Warminster, Wiltshire, England. James had found employment as a Carter and the older children were no longer in the household. They had 3 more children Sydney James Robins, Maria Robbins and Oliver Edward Robbins in the household. Maria Robbins was enumerated as Virtue and Oliver Edward Robbins had only been registered as Oliver when his birth was registered in Frome. A search of the indexes shows that another child Walter Robins had been born in Frome and only lived a few hours.

The family were living in West Street, Warminster, Wiltshire, England when Thurza Ann Robbins was born on 20 August 1864.

In 1871, the last census before his death, James still had 4 children living with him and his wife Elizabeth Cowdry. Oliver Edward Robbins had been joined by 3 younger siblings, Joseph Alexander Robbins, Thurza Ann Robbins and Agnes Lilly Robins, all of them except the youngest were at school.

James died 29 August 1878 in West Street, Warminster, Wiltshire, England.[5]

James was buried on 31 August 1878 in Warminster, Wiltshire, England.[6][7]
