John was born in 1834 in Wayne County Missouri.

John Riley Robinson enlisted on March 17, 1863 at Fayetteville, Arkansas at the age of 28. He served as a private in the Union Army, Company I, Arkansas 1st Infantry Regiment. Deserted Oct 31, 1865 in Ft. Smith Arkansas, Returned February 19, 1865, in Ft Smith Arkansas. After the Civil War he received a pension for serving in Company I, Arkansas Infantry. (His widow was Sarah L. Robinson.) [1]

Military records describe John as: farmer, ht 5' 11", eyes blue, hair light, complexion fair, born in Wayne Co, MO. [2]

In the 1880 Census for Chickalah, Yell County AR John Riley Robinson and his family are household #20, in that same census household #15 is his brother George W. Robinson's family, with this family lives their mother Susannah (Clinkard) Parrish.
