Cumberland was born 10 August 1797 in Cumberland County, Virginia. His parents were Edward Robinson and Anne Meador[1] As a young boy, he moved with his parents and siblings to Middle Tennessee about the year 1806.
About the year 1820, probably in Jackson or Overton County, Tennessee, he married Elizabeth Marchbanks, daughter of Josiah Marchbank and his first wife Ellen Binum. [2]
Cumberland and his family can be found in the 1830 census records of Hardeman County, Tennessee. [3] By the time the 1840 census was taken the family is located in neighboring Madison County, Tennessee. [4] The family is enumerated in the 1850 census of Madison County, Tennessee. [5]
Cumberland and his family immigrated to Arkansas from Tennessee in September of 1850, and located in Prairie County. [2] Cumberland Robinson died on 17 October 1850 in Prairie County, Arkansas. [6]
Research Notes
Twelve of the children of Cumberland and Elizabeth Robinson have been identified through census, marriage, death, court, and other records. The remaining child was a female. Her name is yet unknown, as is her birth or death information.
Many online family trees show Cumberland was born in Tennessee. The story they present is that he was born while his family was making their way through the Cumberland mountains on the way from Virginia to Tennessee. These trees claim that he was named for those mountains. This information was presented in Biographical and Historical Memoirs: Pulaski, Jefferson, Lonoke, Faulkner, Grant, Saline, Perry, Garland and Hot Spring Counties, Arkansas (Chicago, Nashville, and St. Louis: The Goodspeed Publishing Co.,1899), p 641-642, Lonoke Co., AR, information by his son Josiah Marchbanks Robinson.
Cute story, but that is all it is, just a story. The records show that Edward and Anne Robinson and family were still residing in Cumberland County Virginia in December 1805. Cumberland County Virginia Order Book: 1803 - 1807, (December 24, 1805, p 273)
A deed from Edward Robinson to John Miller is acknowledged and ordered to be recorded, Ann, his wife, being privately examined relinquished her right of dower. If anything, his name came from the county of his birth, Cumberland County, Virginia.
