Biography
Anna was born March 29, 1891 in Coloma, Wisconsin to Charles Sanford Robinson (1863-1951) and Ada Marie (Kent) Robinson (1863-1903).[1] However before February, 1893 when her brother Vernon was born the family moved to the neighbouring township of Hancock.[2] They lived in Hancock at least until June of 1895, when her father and his household were listed in the 1895 state census.[3] Between then and August, 1899 when her brother Harold was born, the family moved to Brandon village, Metomen township, Wisconsin.[4]
In 1900 Annie's family was living in Brandon village in Metomen township of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. There, the family rented a farm where Annie, her parents, her seven siblings, and one servant lived.[5] By March of 1902 they moved back to Hancock where Annie's sister Eva was born.[6] Annie's youngest sibling Gladys was born in 1903 in Hancock.[7] Just 4 months after Gladys' birth, their mother died.[8] According to family stories, she died after a spider bite.[9]
In 1905 the family was living on their own farm in Hancock township. Anna's oldest brother Bert had left the family home.[10] In November, 1905, Anna's father married a young girl who was only three years older than Anna. A younger half-sister was born in Waupaca in 1906 so the family was living there then.[11] A younger half-brother was born in 1908, also in Waushara county.[12] The marriage did not last and between 1910 and 1914 Anna's stepmother left with one of her children.
The older children, including Anna, did not feel that their sister Gladys was properly cared for and the older girls took it upon themselves to be responsible for Gladys.[13] In 1910 Gladys was listed in the census twice, once in her father's household where Anna was still living[14] and once in her sister Viola's household.[15]
During this time Anna met Darwin Follett who was studying at Stevens Point Normal School. On July 10, 1910 she and Darwin were spending time with friends in the Waupaca area. At some point in the afternoon the two of them snuck off and were married.[16][17][18]

Anna and Darwin Follett |
In 1913 their first child Vilas Follett (1913-1915) was born. Sadly, when Vilas was just two years old he died of cancer in the clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.[19][20][21] Three more children followed:
- Anabel (Follett) Baker in 1916
- Kenyon Follett in 1918
- Ada Mae (Follett) Congdon in 1919.
In 1920 Anna and Darwin were living in the village of Coloma. Anna's sister Gladys was living with the family, as Anna had taken her in to their household soon after her marriage.[22] Anna had help with her three children and runing the household as the family employed a servant.[23]
When Anna's children were still very young she became very ill and was diagnosed with diabetes. She was taken to the Mayo Clinic where she was one of the first group of patients to receive insulin, saving her life. This would have been in about 1922 and Anna was just a few weeks away from death, according to her doctors. (Story about the role of the Mayo Clinic, Insulin, and Frederick Banting) Anna was on insulin for the rest of her life. She became a resource for others diagnosed with diabetes and gave presentations on managing the disease at the Mayo Clinic.[24]
By 1930 Gladys had left the family home and Darwin and Anna had just their own children in the household.[25]
With the children all in school, Anna became active in the Moetta Rebekah Lodge, a service oriented organization.[26] She served as secretary-treasurer[27] and vice-president for the local branch.[28]
The 1940 census, taken June 1, shows Anna and Darwin living in Coloma, Darwin now president of the bank and daughter Anabel working at the bank. Ada Mae, on Census Day, was living in the family home, but Kenyon was not.[29] 1940 was a huge year in Anna's household, her son Kenyon married in January, daughter Ada Mae in June, and daughter Anabel in September. With no children at home, Anna and Darwin travelled more often and for further distances. They enjoyed travelling, usually attending some type of conference while on their trip. In 1941 they attended the National Hardware Convention in New Orleans.[30] Other trips took them to the Black Hills of South Dakota,[31] New Mexico and the Grand Canyon,[32] and to Florida.[33] Anna particularly enjoyed Florida and called the sunroom on her home, the "Florida room".[34] Upon her return from her travels Anna added the route to her embroidered map of the United States.[35]
Anna, along with two other members of the Federation of Womens' Club Edna Shorey and Helen Leach, was instumental in starting the Coloma Library. At first, they arranged for books to be brought from the library in Madison and kept at Edna's home for perusal, but then they arranged library space in the Village Hall and fire station. The library ran between 1937 and 1960.
It was very important to Anna to improve the Village of Coloma however she could. She purchased a house in the village and improved it, even turning it for better placement on the lot, to provide better housing. She hired local unemployed men to work in her huge garden to make sure they could provide for their families. Community service was very important to her and Darwin.
Family time was also spent at the family cottage on nearby Pleasant Lake.[36][37]
In 1950 Anna and Darwin were the only members of their household. Although, the house to the west was that of their son Kenyon and his family, and the house to the east was the household of daughter Ada Mae and her family and Darwin's father, Vilas Follett. Darwin was still president of the bank, but now Kenyon was working for the bank as well.[38]
They continued to travel, often bringing grandchildren with them. A favourite destination was still Florida where daughter Anabel and her family lived.[39] And family events included the whole extended family, often taking place at the lake cottage on the "Point" of Pleasant Lake.[40] In 1957 Anna and Darwin purchased a home in St. Petersburg, Florida and spent much of the winter there.[18]
Anna, was still active in various organizations (the Rebekahs, Royal Neighbors of America, Coloma Women's Club), travelling to various conferences. She was travelling home from a conference in California with Darwin and their eldest grandson, when Darwin was stricken by a heart attack in Prescott, Arizona. Anna was widowed in 1959.[41]
Anna continued to live in Florida and Coloma, still actively travelling, but always with a grandchild. Her diabetes caused her to need to have a leg amputated below the knee. She was still active, getting around with a prosthetic leg and using a chair lift for the stairs in the Coloma house.
December 11, 1965 Anna died in St. Petersburg of a heart attack.[18] She was buried in the Hilllside Cemetery in Coloma next to Darwin.[42]
In 1997 Anna was honored with the building of a community center in Coloma, named the Anna Follett Memorial Center.
