Biography

Ann was born in 1809, in England.

She married James Edward Gibbs on 14 May 1832, in Hampshire, England. They had six children: James, John, William, Thomas, George, and Martha.

Ann emigrated to New Zealand with her husband, James, and their son William, aboard the Bolton, in 1841. Sadly, James, John, and Thomas had all passed away prior to their emigrating. Even sadder, William appears to have passed away while the Bolton was at sea.

They arrived in Nelson, New Zealand on 15 March 1842. George was born two years later, followed by Martha two years after him. They were the only ones of Ann's six children to survive to adulthood.

Ann passed away in 1848. She is buried in the Hallowell Cemetery, Nelson, New Zealand.

Research Notes

Ann had a set of twins in 1842 unknown what sex as they were premature.

The twins were Mary Ann Gibbs's (wife of Isaac Gibbs, John's younger brother), and were born and died at sea, according to: https://web.archive.org/web/20120617054325/http://www.museumnp.org.nz/pdfs/PassengerLists.pdf

This profile is missing James and Ann's son William, born ~1838 per the 1841 England and Wales Census. He is the only child listed for them in any of the Bolton passenger lists, and the Bolton Passenger Manifest indicates that he died at sea.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Ann by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Ann:

According to my family record, Ann's twins were a female and a male child. However, according to this passenger manifest [1], the twins were not Ann's but her sister-in-law Mary Ann's children, who were born and died at sea. Mary Ann and her husband, Isaac, who was James Edward Gibbs's younger brother, also emigrated to New Zealand on the Bolton. (I have completely revised my comments re the twins, here, in light of this information.)

My family record is also called into question because it lists two living children traveling from England with their parents, 4yo William and 2yo Thomas, with Thomas dying at sea and William dying in New Zealand at the end of the same year. The Bolton passenger list does not have a Thomas Gibbs listed, and there is a cross next to William's name, indicating he died on board ship. [2]

Of course, errors did occur on passenger lists, so this will be worth pursuing to determine which information is accurate. It will for me, at least, so I can make sure my records are accurate. :-) Since descendants of James Gibbs reportedly still operate the family farm in New Zealand, it would be interesting to learn if a family Bible or such is extant that might contain the original documentation of these events.
