The census shows he was born in Virginia to a father born in North Carolina and mother born in Virginia. Some researchers have identified him as a son of James Roberson and Catharina Helvey. As Winston Robinson he appears on the 1835 tax list of Lee County near James Robinson and Morgan Robinson (East District, page 12). However, he was not named in James' 1835 will.

He was probably an unrelated person who came into the county with his 1835 marriage to Elizabeth Reasor. A record on Ancestry.com calls him a son of William Robinson (1762-1821) and Sally Rives, of Greensville County, Virginia. However, he is not named in William's 1822 will.

He was in Vigo County, Indiana in 1839 when his son was born, in 1844 when he re-married, and in 1850 when he was enumerated on the census.

By 1880 he was a retired physician, was enumerated on the 1880 census of Henry County (now Carroll County), Missouri.
