Stephen was born about 1753, estimated from marriage.
He married Mary Rushworth on 5 July 1779 at Bradford, Yorkshire. Both of that parish, he signed, she marked. His occupation, weaver. Witnesses were Thomas Rushworth and Samuel Yeadon. Bishop's transcripts show "Stephen Robinson and Mary Rushworth of Thornton".[1] They had children Stephen, Mary, John, Joseph, and Lucy. Three of the children were baptised at Kipping Chapel, Thornton, and two at Ovenden Zion Chapel, Halifax (Methodist New Connexion). All except Mary 1787 show both parents' names. The Halifax baptisms give the abode as Thornton and John is shown as "of Stephen and Mary Robinson of Close-head in Thornton".[2]
Their youngest child Lucy was born in 1793 and Mary apparently died not long afterwards as Stephen remarried on 8 August 1796 at Bradford to Sally Normington, a widow. Stephen Robinson, weaver, Sally Normington, widow. He signed, she marked. Witnesses Samuel Lumby and James ?Pearson. Signature very similar to first marriage.[3] They had children Simeon, Susey, Aaron, Abram, Jonah, Benjamin, and Samuel. Again, some of the children were baptised at Mount Zion, Ovenden, and some at Kipping, Thornton. The baptism of their first child Simeon shows as "Simeon son of Stephen and Sally Robinson of Close-head in Thorntown".[4]
There were other Stephen Robinsons locally at this time but no other known in Thornton with a wife Mary. Stephen Robinson and Ann Akeroyd married 6 April 1778 and Stephen Robinson and Martha Bairstow married 22 April 1776 in Bradford. There was also a marriage of a Stephen Robinson and Mary Scholefield in Halifax 23 October 1780.
Several members of the Kipping chapel also baptised children at the Zion chapel, Ovenden. The Ovenden chapel was in the same circuit as South Parade Wesleyan, Halifax, and some baptisms have a duplicate record indexed there.
No baptism found for Stephen yet. The register of Kipping Chapel does not commence until 1756. It is likely that his parents were Stephen Robinson and Luce Hardy who married on 27 May 1751 at Bradford. They both died in 1787 "of Closehead" the same place as Stephen lived according to the baptism of his son John. His next daughter was baptised "Luse", perhaps named for her grandmother, although both also used the name Lucy.
