John Robinson arrived in New Zealand aboard the Helvellyn in November of 1863. John Robinson served in the 3rd Waikato Regiment during the New Zealand Wars. Upon enlistment in January 1864, he was a twenty-year-old baker. His height is recorded as 5 ft 4 1/2 in. John served for three years and was awarded the New Zealand War Medal for conduct in the invasion of Ōrākau, the last battle of the Waikato Wars. In the aftermath he also received a grant of land in Cambridge.[1]
He married his wife Marion on 17 July 1865 at the residence of Duncan McNicol of the Otau Emigration Settlement, Wairoa River, Clevedon.[2] Their first son John was born in 1869 at their home in Grahamstown, Thames, where John was a baker until 1875, when he moved to Auckland.
